Action. Okay. So Greg, you've recently installed a solar system in your house. What have you put in? Yeah, so it was, that's three and a half years. That's the reasonable reason. It was a 10 and a half kilowatt solar array with a 8.2 kilowatt, I think they were, from GEM, like the battery inverter. So that was the generation just before this. But yeah, it was eight, just over eight kilowatt inverter and 10 and a half kilowatt of solar panel. And how did you decide what you needed for your specific needs and how you used the home? Yeah, so I've been into solar for a lot of years and basically, so I have a pretty good understanding of solar and what it can do. And we've got a reasonably low energy juncture. So understand how many kilowatts and stuff you consume and that's really easy because it's on your table. So have a look at that first. One of the things that I always wanted to do, I had a very small off-grid system, much of my life's delights of fiddling around. So that's on the shed. That's my shed in the backyard. So that's my little... Yeah, it was always the intent to put a grid-connected system on the house. So in terms of monitoring, so my dad, this is a true story, he goes out every hour and writes how many kilowatts he's generating and how much is going to the grid, how much is he using, and he logs it. Are you one of those people? No. No. I've seen them better. But I do check my app. I'll sit at work when I'm having my lunch, short lunch break, and I'll flip the app on to check out what's happening because I live a little away from home, and sometimes I'll So no, I don't go to that level, but I do at home. I don't think anyone else would. Because other people have a life. Like that's a... He's retired. He's risen. Too much time. Yeah. And a bit of a tech nerd. Bit of a science nerd. Yeah. Yeah. But the app, they're trying to have an app, but there's also the desktop, there's a desktop website you can go into as well. And that's where you can get like downloaded in like Excel, and so if you really want to do that stuff, you can grab it. Oh yeah, that would be my dad. He'd be exporting spreadsheets. What about in terms of charging the EV? I'm very interested in that. We've got a Tesla, and a couple of the guys at work joke about how my coal side... Sorry. A couple of guys at work joke about how my coal-fueled car's going. Yeah. When do you charge your EV? We charge it... Out of time, and most of that is off solar. But yeah, we've all heard those jokes that you can drive an electric car, but you know, you're powered by coal. And in some cases, that would be the case. Getting less and less. Definitely not for our car. So yeah, we charge from home. I get proper transport to work, so the car is at home most of the day, and that's my wife's out. But you don't need to charge the car every day. So if you're doing sort of less than a hundred kilometers a day, or whatever, you're only charging... I've got a smaller battery car compared to yours, so you could probably get away with charging once or twice a week. We charge twice a week with a smaller battery. But yeah, 100% of it is from solar. Solar. And with the integrated charger and all that, again, it's allowing you to pack and control it from in solar. Did you already have an EV prior to getting solar installed? So you must have really felt that then when the solar kicked in on your car with your lighting. Yeah, yeah, we did. Again, we were a reasonably low consumption household to start with, and the EV was the main runaround. But we weren't necessarily doing any trips quite at the time. So our power bill did increase, maybe 30%. And then about 18 months, up to two years after we got the car, we were in a position financially and a few other things done, but we were ready to get the solar. And once we got that, well, that was no... We were in credit. Yeah. We had quite feeding tariffs, and we were in credit for a couple of years. Great. Even having EVs. So I saw you sitting over there. You're admiring this new battery. What are your thoughts? What are your thoughts? Yeah. No, it's fantastic. The first thing is it's got really thin. I've never seen a home battery that thin. So yeah, it's great. It's going to really fit into spots where other batteries may not necessarily fit. So you don't have a battery yet? And is that on the card? It could be. Again, it really comes down to our use case. At the moment, we probably don't need it. But just wait. Look, this one's modular. It comes in different modules. Keep adding. The good thing is it's ground now, and then you can just add modules to it. So yeah, you can start out small and then increase as you go. Really, to be honest, the only benefit or the main mistake for me for a battery would be the air conditioning overnight here in Queensland. Yeah, right. So we air condition the house by chilling it right down through the day, obviously, But it'd be nice to be able to just leave that. Because, yes, running the air conditioning at night feels like the ultimate indulgence. Yes. It's a nice way to wake up the next day. Yeah. But it will point to you getting older as well. It's only going to be a few years and we'll have teenagers. So that changes the consumption. Oh, yeah. We know all about that. Yes. So, yeah, we know what's going to happen in the future. I should mention, too, that we have a solar hot water system. So hot water is a big consumer of energy. So, yeah, people just need... Well, that's what happens with teenagers. They stay in the shower until it goes cold. And then, yeah, we're... Somebody told me the other day, they said, Your daughter is going to be huge. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. How did you fare during Cyclone Alfred? Did you have any backup systems in your house? We did, but only very small. So that's off-grid system. I mentioned it was on my shed. That's about the only time my wife said, Oh, she's actually going to be handy. But it's only a really small system. So it kept one of the fridges going. So, again, a grid-connected battery with black start capability. That's another thing people need to consider. You can have a battery there if it's not configured and set up correctly. If you have a grid fire, it won't necessarily work. And that's one of the things with solar as well. There's a misconception out there that people think we've got solar. As we had the cyclone, we actually lost power for five days. So we were one of the first suburbs that was infected quite early. So, unfortunately, our Fronius system wasn't helping us with our battery. Well, I've got a product for you. Yeah. Yeah. No, I mean, honestly, we were the same. We went 12 days without power, and it was tough. Yeah. Yeah. You really don't know how good you've got it until you don't have it yet. And that's it. You just don't understand how convenient this is. And that's what I was talking about. Now we've got more power than we can use through the day. You do get a bit blasé about it. I always just leave all the TV on and everything. Kids left the door open in the fridge. So, yeah, when you don't have it, then you're like, wow. Yeah. Yeah. We lost water too at some point. So, we just got the full experience. Again, some people have solid water systems that they need to pump, pump it around. So, yeah, things like the battery and insurance policy. Yeah. And I think we sort of realise that with climate change and stuff, these weather events are happening more and more. Absolutely. You never know when they're coming. So, yeah, it's good insurance to have this. Yeah. Yeah. Anything else we need to touch on? That's difficult. I think the multiple configurations I just said. I mean, it covers quite a lot. Yeah. It's actually great. You've got Microsoft. You've got, like, the YouTube for monitoring why it's gone so low. How it's being used. I thought we jumped into the appliance side. Again, so I can't give you that as a detail. We're just trying to understand why, you know, sometimes actually a lot of the appliances that you're buying are using the most electricity to run, you know. Have you got any of that? Do you kind of know which ones are being used the most out? You know, anything on the internet. We could probably go into something similar to that. Yeah. Yeah. Action. Oh, no. You're good. Okay. Action. You're doing it. Yeah. Oh, I can do it if you want. So, Greg, what would the biggest advantage of, say, adding a battery like this to your system be? So, really, to utilise your own solar for those heavy appliances overnight. Well, there's stuff that's saved, which you mentioned, so that's a big one. We can leave that on the phone overnight. Currently, my wife's actually working. I work from home a couple of days a week, but she's not working. So, if and when she goes back to work, it's about having that solar power saved up while we're at work and not using anything while we're at work. Of course, then you can't bake the bread, but you can set the dishwasher on that system. But you obviously won't be able to do as much. So, you're saving that power, which is your own power, and you're using that at night. So, for us, too, we've recently gone on to demand tariffs and time of use tariffs. So, most people will be familiar with the sort of move away from the old set one tariff to all these different tariffs. And it's the most expensive time to use energy, just when everyone comes home from work. Yeah, and that's when you would be using the most energy, I would say. You're cooking, showering. Yeah, yeah. They know what they're doing. That's right. So, in terms of how much would you ... Do you know how much you'd be buying electricity for during that time? Rick's old crane, it'd be 46 cents. 46 cents. And how much ... Okay, and if you were putting electricity back into the system during the day, how much are they giving you? 10 cents, which is actually really, really good. So, 10 cents. Okay, so the average is 2 cents. So, during the day, if you didn't have a battery, you're just putting that back into the system and they're paying you bugger off per kilowatt. But then you get home and you use what you're sitting at and you're paying 46 cents per kilowatt. Yeah. So, I guess you might need to do some math there. I know we do, to see if it's worth putting in a battery such as this. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's it. And as I said, your needs change, which I know I'm going to be going into a period over the next few years where it will increase. So, for me, it's a much nicer ... Not only for us, but also from an environmental perspective. Absolutely, yeah. To know that I'm using the power that I've been running for the days. Yeah. You are across all your numbers. You have the greatest apps that you're tracking. Tell me which appliances are using the most power. You do? Yeah. Number one, we call that setting appliance. So, it's always on charge. That means it's on there. The second one would probably be, if we have to boost the hot water, that is the electric boost on the solar hot water. So, if we've got a couple of overcast days, that will definitely be the second one. And we have a manual switch on that, so we can control that as well. Third one would be the heater in the dishwasher. Not the dishwasher, the washing machine, where we heat the water up. So, that's a choice whether you use that or not. Fourth one would be the dishwasher. And then, sort of down from there, we've got a fridge. You're throwing down some bits and pieces. Yeah. Basically, anything with a heating element is going to really draw that power, isn't it? And can you track that on there? You can. It doesn't break it down. So, you can track your overall consumption. So, it's a process of elimination, really. If you turn sort of most of everything else off, and then you turn the electric kettle on and watch the app, you'll be able to see how much it raises. So, you can turn the dishwasher on. So, it's sort of, you can do it, but it's on a case-by-case, one-at-a-time basis. What I've done is, you can buy, $20, $30, you can buy a little plug-in watt-hour meter. So, if it's a plug-in appliance, you can plug one of those in and set it, and it will track. Right. Yeah. Okay. That's a cheap little way, if somebody wants to sort of really go down to that level. You've mentioned a couple of times, cloudy days impacting the efficacy. How much? Is it like a big impact? Yes, it is. So, clouds have a, depending on how thick it is, have a big impact on regeneration. If you've just got light cloud, it can actually be a good thing, because it disperses the sun rays, and I'm not a technical expert on this, this is just from observation. But, yeah, any sort of cloud does have an impact, and you get down to points, like if it's raining, you're basically getting zero output. Yeah, right. So, yeah. And given where you've got solar hot water and solar TV, yeah, that day-to-day, to be honest, yeah. Do you think, because I feel like it rained all summer last year, I was like, we live in the sunshine state, but it rained for six months. Yeah. It doesn't seem that much different. You're right, when you think about it, it's more than I think, but we have a day-to-day here and there. Yeah. It's a bit like trying to dry your washing, and you know, that's the norm. We do. Do we cover it all throughout the night time? Covered night time? I mean... We do, but we can do it again if you want an option. Somebody asked it, wasn't it? Yeah, I think... Oh, sorry. I'll go with you. The intention is to try and get people to think around, like, you know what, why should I be looking at a battery that long? So, for example, I think you sort of mentioned around, like, why is the air colour, you know, they can be seen around. Yeah, absolutely. That is, I'm sorry. We spoke about Paris. Yeah, Paris. I think you could probably tie that in. You sort of talked about something. Like, you know, there's no specific product on the market. Yeah, sure. And there was, like, a point where you kind of said, like, when you're getting to the decision process, maybe that's what you're getting. I don't know if it was the beginning, saying, you know, this is because we use very long or around, you know, because we mix. But, like, kind of also saying, why is it worth on the system, maybe to get something when you know it's already on the market for a considerable amount of time. Like, we've actually reached one time where it's a warranty. Versus maybe other ones, they have proof, but they can't come to Paris and get that thing. Yeah. All right. But if you run out of data on something, like, well, if we're definitely going to go Yeah. Yeah. Good. Okay. So, what was the initial investment for you, for your whole system? So, we actually needed to upgrade a few things, which doesn't exist in Paris. So, we spent $10,000 in, sorry, $13,000 in total. But a couple of thousand dollars for that was the switchboard upgrade. Switchboard was now too small and it needed to be upgraded and they had to cut bricks out of the wall and stuff. So, yeah, we had to spend a little bit of extra on our back patio roof. So, we got some panels put on that. So, they were behind the house, but it wasn't going to be on the front of the house. We're going to put risers on, so that possibly we'll get more on the racking and stuff. So, yeah, a few extra pieces from the standard sort of install process. And what sort of decision-making process did you go through in trying to find the right installer? Yeah. So, I mentioned that I've spoken to the motorbike guys a number of years earlier. So, I really connected with those guys and liked the ethos of the quality gear that they use. But I work in the procurement and sort of supplier contact management field. So, I did get a couple of other quotes. And when I got those quotes, I asked to sort of, you know, the cheapest, the middle ground, you know, the top ones. Sorry, it's my fault. I messed up. I'll fix it. I'll fix it. I'll fix it. I'll fix it. I'll fix it. So what we've found, we're plugging that in in the kitchen and we sit it on top of the gas cooktop from time to time. So when we're cooking the casseroles and things that are taking hours, if we're doing it through the day, in the afternoon, we'll use that. That's funny because that's a backwards attitude to what we were always taught as kids. Our parents were always telling us to turn off the lights and try to save as much electricity as possible. So using electricity instead of using other resources, there's that benefit. Gas was really cheap. Everybody was ripping out electrical stuff and putting it in gas. Now the opposite has happened. So electricity is generally cheaper than gas. So if I own gas, you can make it yourself. You've got the solar system on your roof, you're making your own power and you're using it yourself. So for me, that's a bit of a no-brainer. I have to say though, gas stove has saved us quite a few times in blackouts where it's the only thing that works in the house. So I'm not quite ready to get rid of that one. That's a good point. You want that redundancy to back up stuff. It's great. I've got a product for you now. Look at this battery. What about in terms of like a mutual setup, like a mutual purchasing of the product? I know there's a little bit of anxiety from consumers where it is like a big outlay at the start and it could potentially be a number of years before you see that return. Again, I think it comes to your use case. So what the use case is. You can start small. A lot of us start modular now. So even with a solar system, you can start smaller. Maybe get a bigger inverter with panels and you'll save more later. Same with the batteries now. The batteries are modular so you can start small and then add some later on or you can start small, see how you go. If you need more, you can add more. So yeah, it's really about, I think the thing is start. Just make a start. So do what you can afford and then build from there later on. And you obviously have a passion for this. You know everything there is to know about solar almost and we are sort of on the skirts of it but we didn't even realise there was rebates available at the moment. Yeah, exactly. So sometimes you do live in a bit of a bubble. So we're talking about EVs before. So there's a lot of things, given that I've had an EV for five years, I just take for granted that everyone knows. Quite often I've got a call back and go, actually hang on, there's a lot of work that's done and I need to speed things up. So yeah, rebates have been around now for a few months provided by the federal government and that's been a big increase I guess in the demand for batteries. So yeah, it's sort of made it economical now. Whereas before, unless you were a very heavy user of energy through the night, it might not have made sense. Whereas now, I think it's really a no-brainer if you've got the spare cash to buy it and you've got the space to put it in. Yeah, it's economical now with that rebate. You actually make me feel a little guilty about not utilising it as much as we possibly can. You're like a superhero, this solar superhero. I think in post we'll put a cape on you and then maybe a mask. Can we do that? I don't know. We can put a mask and a cape. I like to really talk to people about it. Like you say, there's a lot of people that this stuff doesn't interest them. They just, what a solar system. They want something to put it on. They don't want to think about it. They just look at the bill and hope it comes down. Yeah. That sounds very familiar. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But sometimes it's nice to just dig in a little bit further and understand, well, what works for one person may not work for somebody else. So, yeah, I encourage everyone to just have a basic understanding of what you need, what your budget is and take it from there because, yeah, not every system is the same. I think it would be so empowering actually to have a little bit more control and access to the information, what your input and output is and that's something we could definitely do better. Yeah.
